Spanish National Court Judge Eloy Valasco has raised the blood pressure of diplomats in three countries after accusing the Venezuelan government of providing logistical assistance to the Basque separatist group ETA and the Colombian rebel group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), acting as a go-between and facilitating meetings on Venezuelan soil where the two rebel groups plotted to kill several high profile political figures in Spain and Columbia, including president Álvaro Uribe.
The accusation by judge Velasco:
“There is evidence in this case which shows the Venezuelan government’s co-operation in the illegal association between Farc and Eta”
The pro forma denial by some anonymous Venezuelan press minister:
“[These are] unacceptable allegations, of a politically motivated nature, against the government of Venezuela
…
We do not house guerrillas, nor do we have a pact with guerrillas,”
Surprisingly, the obligatory Colombian outrage has thus far been absent, perhaps awaiting something more concrete than accusations from a notoriously inflammatory judiciary .
This is not the first dispute between Venezuela and its former imperial master, in 2008 King Juan Carlos told Chavez to “shut up” when he interrupted a speech being given by Spanish PM Jose Luis Zapatero during an Ibero-American. That must’ve been priceless…
